Edgar

For the first time ever,Puccini's opera Edgar will be performed in his home town of Torre del Lago. This annual opera festival celebrates the 150th. Anniversary of Puccini's birth in a stunning new open air theatre overlooking the lake.

The performances of Edgar will take place on the evenings of, the 9th and the 16th, of August.

About a year ago the director, Vivien Hewitt approached Roger to ask him if he would consider designing the sets and costumes for this opera. After considering this proposal for all of two minutes Roger was happy to accept but suggested that his daughter Freyja could work with him on the costumes.

This project was much less abstract than the stages that he and his brother Martyn had designed for other groups but presented different sorts of challenges that he looked forward to dealing with.

The work on the costumes and sets began about a year ago with preliminary sketches passing via email and occasional visits backwards and forwards between London and Torre del Lago. Constantly, throughout this period of time the music and the libretti for Edgar were listened to and referred to as the colours and qualities of the sets and costumes were considered.
