Yellow City

Joseph Morse says:
I became acquainted with this masterpiece when I bought the Yesyears box set. To me it's a crowning achievement to the combined artistry of Roger & Yes up to that time, but buy no means the grand finale. As the picture suggests, the artistry of Roger and Yes will, as it has always done, continue to reach new plateaus. Always innovative and perpetually changing.

arief setiawan says:
karya yang ajaib, liar, orisinal, membuat kita merasa ada di dunia lain, menjadi inspirasi untuk banyak karya seni, dan tentu saja membuat kita berani menciptakan sesuatu yang sebelumnya tak terbayangkan...
bravo roger dean..

Compare Merdacotta says:
I'm 19, and I started to be a Yes fan when I was 14. Looking at the CD covers in the shop, when I saw Yellow City I was very surprised, recognizing some characters of my drawings( but I have to say that I'm not a painter, I just draw on pieces of paper only with pen or pencils, because I don't know how to use colors--I'm an engineering student... :) ). First of all the floating islands, that I used to dream... Another thing that impressed me were the colors, even if I'm almost dalthonic (sometimes I see green sunsets and orange grass fields, but it happens only with certain gradations of green or red). As a work of great art, the exterior is only a small part of the painting. There is something more I feel, something that goes over my rationality, because when I see Dean's works, I'm projected into them: they're windows over another world, strange devices between a telescope and a kaleidoscope. Dean is one of my favourite painters, together with Arcimboldi and Escher.
I'm sorry for my English... I'm Italian.

A.Crielaard says:
Of all Roger Dean covers he did for Yes, this must be my favourite. Wonderful bright feeling. Just a little left of heaven.

newton ribeiro says:

Roger muy buenas noches. Es un gusto el observar tus cuadros pues tus naturalezas son muy relajantes y la diversidad de los colores es muy interesante , son buenos cuadros que solo pueden hacer los grandes.....felicidades!

Eric Lofgren says:
It's difficult for me to be objective about Roger's work as I literally grew up pouring over every square inch of his paintings. The reason I'm a Yes fan today is simply because of the fact that Roger's art was on the cover of the first album of theirs I purchased. (Classic Yes, I believe). Regarding "Yellow City", it typifies, to me, what I expect from a Dean painting; incredible color schemes; lush landscapes to make an Orientalist drool; and, of course, that deliciously mysterious subtext that can be found in each and every Dean painting. Perhaps more than anything, it's just that which will always draw me into a Dean, the little clues that hint at a much grander scheme of which the painting is a snapshot, a snippet of a story that seems to encompass all his work and will most likely never be able to be told in full...I go on, but done only in sheer respect and awe for an artist who I'm sure will stand the test of time and influence for years yet to come.

it looks to be a very-very beautiful city maybe if i can see any city like that i would stay forever in there.... someday i hope i can go there in heaven

Jasper Joppe Geers says:
YEAH! Allright dear people, time to put on your sunglasses! I'm sure Roger has used one while painting this image... Especially when you consider the actual size of it! (Most of Roger's Images are done lately on a size of 180 x 128 cm, so chances are that Yellow City is one of them) Yellow City, a strange image? Perhaps. There are only a few images done by Dean you could compare with this one, although it consists of several well-known items (the background blend, the floating rocks with trees, the way he painted the city). It shows beautifully how Dean should create an image with a Japanese/Chinese "feel" in it.
One thing that questions me is the relationship between the image and it's first target, the packaging of YesYears, the 4 CD compilation of Yesmusic. The only link of course is the big "Y" painted like a towering city... My suggestion would be to show this image in 4 corner parts, each part as the front of the CD's , but hey! Who am I? Right. Just a fan...
When I saw the image Roger has done for the Japanese bundled version of Keys to Ascension 1 & 2 There was no relationship in my eyes either. On the other hand (for those who actually know this image) there sure is a relationship between the images of Yellow City and the image done for the KTA bundle; the straight brownish rocks.
Another thing i'd like to talk about here is the way he did the Lizard... A thing I mentioned earlier on the Dragons Garden Image, is that Roger Dean has improved himself particularly on animals and dragons. In the early days he would do the animal seperately, snip em out and glue it on board... This lizard surely is a beautiful one.
See ya next month!

Monkey Man says:
This image, like so many of Roger Dean's, is deceptive. The first time I saw it I was impressed by the feeling of space but there didn't seem to be much going on. However each time I come back to look at it it rewards me by revealing more. I see so many echoes of things gone by and times yet to come: the towering Y, the lizard echoing the shape of the rocks in the distance, the strange foreground object, what is this? Almost like a creature, maybe a tree, maybe a being from another time, it seems to have something to say to us... Once more Roger has taken the shapeless ideas from our unconcious and given them form. Long may he continue!
